Creating A Kitty Garden
April 15, 2022
Do you keep your cat indoors? If so, that’s great! Fluffy does enjoy going outside and indulging in kitty ‘sports’ like sniffing grass, making paw art on your car, and ignoring you when you call her. However, she’ll be much safer inside, where she’s protected from traffic, weather, and other threats. Want to give your furball the best of both worlds? Make her a kitty garden! A Bend, OR veterinarian offers some advice on this below.
Herbs
Do you like cooking? Go ahead and add some fresh herbs. Parsley, rosemary, dill, and sage are all good options. Catnip, of course, is also a must.
Plants
Our feline buddies love to peek out at their humans from behind green leaves, and pretend they’re fierce lions and tigers. Some safe options include Spider plants, Boston ferns, Cast Iron plants, and. African violets are another good choice. Many orchids are also fine.
Succulents
Many succulents, including Chickens and Hens, Echeveria plants, and Painted Lady plants, are all safe for kitties. They’re also easy to grow, which makes them a great option for people with brown thumbs.
Potted Trees
Potted trees can give any place a classy, inviting feel. They also offer Fluffy something to hide behind, so she can ambush you as you walk past. Several palms, such as ponytail and Areca palms, are also safe, as are rubber trees.
Grasses
Cat grass, or oat grass, and wheat grass are actually very good for our feline pals. You can plant them in small containers for your furball. You can also turn an old litterbox into a little lawn for Fluffy by adding soil and grass seeds. Instant purr!
Safety
Be sure only to include plants that are safe for Fluffy. You can find a full list of both toxic and non-toxic plants on the ASPCA website here.
Layout
Fluffy loves to bat at things so that she may paw at trailing vines or leaves. Keep bigger plants in large pots on the floor. You don’t want your furry buddy pulling anything over on herself!
Purrniture
Kitty gardens are great places for some cat furniture, such as a kitty tower or hammock. You can buy your feline friend’s things, but there are also lots of great options for making them yourself.
