Great Ways to Celebrate National Pet Week

May 1, 2021

National Pet Week starts May 2nd! Our animal companions truly do fill our lives with love! They provide comfort and companionship in bad times, and just generally help turn houses into home. Your furry best friend definitely deserves some extra TLC! A Bend, OR vet lists a few ways you can do that below.

Young Pets

Do you have a kitten or puppy? Get your adorable little buddy some new toys, and indulge them with some extra playtime. That super cute toddler phase won’t last long! If your fuzzy pal hasn’t met their doctor yet, carve out some time for that appointment as well. Proper veterinary care is always important, but it’s crucial at this stage of your pet’s life. After all, you want your animal companion to get started out on the right paw in life!

Once Fluffy and Fido are all grown up, their needs change a bit. You may spend less time plucking your kitten off your drapes, and more time holding a laser pointer for her to pounce on. Dogs at this stage need lots of entertainment and activity. Take your canine pal on some fun outings to parks or trails. Or, set up a puppy playdate. Have some friends bring their dogs over. Do a barbeque/potluck for the humans, and set out lots of treats and toys for your furry guests.

Older Pets

If your four-legged pal is a senior, they’ll probably be more interested in comfy beds than in fun toys. Older dogs often become stiff and sore, as many of them develop arthritis or hip dysplasia. Treat Fido to a doggy massage, or even some acupuncture sessions. As for Fluffy, she may appreciate having a few extra beds to curl up on.

No matter what type of pet you have, or how old they are, some special treats are in order. Just make sure to stick with safe, suitable options. Ask your vet for recommendations. This is also a great time to get some super cute pictures of your four-legged friend. Finally, just spend some time with your pet. That special bond we form with our animal companions is definitely something worth celebrating!
