Caring For a Dog With Arthritis

December 1, 2019

Did you know that arthritis is one of the most common issues we see in dogs? In fact, over 65 percent of dogs over age seven are afflicted. While arthritis cannot be cured, there are treatments available for it. There are also things you can do at home to keep your faithful pet more comfortable. A Century West, OR vet discusses caring for an arthritic pooch in this article.

Watch For Symptoms

Keep a close eye out for early warning signs. Some common ones are limping, difficulty getting up or down, reduced interest in play, withdrawal, shying, and licking or biting at specific areas. Contact your vet immediately if you notice any of these red flags.

Veterinary Care

Modern veterinary medicine now offers a variety of treatments that can improve Fido’s range of motion, decrease his pain, and help keep that tail wagging. Acupuncture, Chinese herbal therapy, gold bead implants, medication, and other treatments can all be beneficial. Ask your vet for more information.

Comfy Beds

A good bed is definitely a must. You want to be sure Fido can sleep comfortably! Orthopedic beds are great for arthritic dogs, because they offer extra support.

Be sure to keep Fido at a healthy weight. Extra pounds will put even more strain on your canine pal’s bones and joints. Offer your pooch a high-quality, life-stage diet. Certain supplements, such as glucosamine and fish oil, may also be beneficial. Ask your vet for nutritional recommendations, including portion sizes, supplements, and suitable snacks.

Proper Exercise

Fido won’t be as playful as he once was, but he’ll still need proper activity. Most dogs need at least a daily walk. Swimming is also a good option, assuming the weather is good and your furry buddy enjoys it.

Doggy Comforts

Small touches can make a big difference when it comes to keeping Fido comfortable. Pet ramps or stairs will help your canine companion climb stairs and get in and out of the car, while elevated dishes will allow him to eat without straining his neck.

Cold weather often aggravates arthritis. Limit your furry pal’s outdoor time on frigid days. Fido may also appreciate a heated bed and/or a thermal blanket, as well as a comfy doggy jacket.
