The American Veterinary Medical Association just released a study correlating differences in average life span between normal and overweight pets. Cue drum roll!
Guess what? Normal weight dogs of every breed lived longer. The big winners are Dachshunds, Yorkies and Chihuahuas who lived two years longer than their heavy counterparts.
In addition to shorter lives, heavy pets have more problems with arthritis, heart and respiratory disease to name a few.
Medical conditions like low thyroid levels can cause weight gain. The common reason, however, is lack of exercise and too many calories. An evening walk would be good for both of you. There are several prescription diets that work well to reduce and maintain a healthy weight. I know-my cat and dog are on them.
