Puppy Tips

Bend, Oregon is a great place for dogs to live.

Our area has no fleas or heartworm disease, a disease transmitted by mosquitos. The area does have ticks, especially in the high lakes region. Fortunately they do not carry any diseases. We carry a topical product called Vectra that repels fleas, ticks and mosquitos.

Parvo is the disease we are most concerned about in puppies. It is a viral disease that causes vomiting and diarrhea. It can be fatal without proper treatment. We vaccinate against parvo at 8, 12, and 16 weeks. Just because your puppy has received a vaccine does not mean they are fully protected yet. The virus can stay alive in an infected dog’s stool for years. Prevention is the key. It’s okay to take your puppy for a walk around the block, just don’t let them eat another dog’s poop along the way.

Puppies love to chew so make sure you and children remove all objects from the puppy’s environment that can be swallowed. Make sure electrical cords are well hidden.

I like a maximum of three toys at a time. If more are available than your puppy may think everything is a toy including the remote control or your favorite shoes. I like dog specific toys such as squeaky toys, rope chewies, etc. You can swop new toys into the mix to keep things interesting.
